Key Stage 3

Excellence and achievement

    At Aloha College Key Stage 3 follows the requirements of the English National Curriculum and provides continuity from Key Stage 2.

    The curriculum aims to ensure that learners are encouraged to achieve excellence academically, but also focuses on well-being, international citizenship, Spanish culture and personal and social development.

    Curriculum

    At Aloha College Key Stage 3 follows the requirements of the English National Curriculum and provides continuity from Key Stage 2. The curriculum aims to ensure that learners are encouraged to achieve excellence academically, but also focuses on well-being, international citizenship, Spanish culture and personal and social development.

    On entry to KS3, students are placed into form groups with a form tutor to look after their pastoral needs. Students access Humanities, Art, PE, and Modern Foreign Languages in these form groups. In English, Maths and Science, students are streamed according to their ability in these subjects.

    This ensures that all students are engaged in a curriculum that is matched to their particular learning needs, and supports them in achieving their end-of-year targets.

    Excluding Spanish, Sociales and Modern Foreign Languages, all subjects are taught in English and high literacy levels are required of our students. To support students, five lessons of English are taught a week. Students who are not native English speakers are encouraged to sit the University of Cambridge English for Speakers of Other Languages examinations.

    Additional preparation for these examinations is provided by the English Department.

    Academic and Pastoral Support

    At Aloha College, we recognise the fact that students sometimes need additional support to ensure that they achieve to the best of their ability. The Head of Key Stage 3 has responsibility for achievement.

    Students are set a yearly target level. This is based on a range of data including Key Stage 2 results, Midyis predictions and teacher recommendations. Students are assessed through National Curriculum Levels, which enables us to track progress all the way through Key Stage Three.  Students are tested regularly throughout the year to ensure that they are on target to either achieve or better their target levels.

    A range of strategies are used by the Head of Key Stage 3 to support those students who are struggling to achieve their targets, including a focus on teaching and learning styles, achievement mentoring and regular communication with staff and parents. Achievement assemblies take place termly to reward achievement.

    We believe that all students should feel motivated and want to come to school every day. A strong team of Form Tutors supports all students daily through morning registration, parental contact and communication with teaching staff.  A Head of Pastoral Care supports students who might encounter any non-academic issues. Regular counselling, meetings with parents and staff, target-setting and support takes place to allow students to overcome any issues that might arise.

    Individual Development

    As an International School, we aim to encourage students to explore their identity and strengths. At Key Stage 3, we believe that students should not only develop their academic knowledge, but also their ability to work with others, communicate effectively, work independently and problem solve.

    This is achieved through regularly reviewing the curriculum, developing the range of teaching and learning strategies used and offering a variety of curriculum enrichment activities such as after school activities, sporting and academic clubs and end of year trips.
